Career
2008–2013: Career beginnings and Nickelodeon
When Ariana Grande moved to Los Angeles to meet her managers, she shared her dream of recording an R&B album. She said, “I want to make an R&B album.” Her managers replied, “That’s a big goal! Who’s going to buy a 14-year-old’s R&B album?” In 2008, she got the role of cheerleader Charlotte in the Broadway musical 13.

In 2009, Grande joined the cast of Nickelodeon’s Victorious, alongside her 13 co-star Elizabeth Gillies. The show was set in a performing arts high school. Grande played Cat Valentine, a character described as “adorably dimwitted.” To portray Cat, she dyed her hair red every other week, which damaged her hair. The show premiered in March 2010 and drew 5.7 million viewers, making it one of Nickelodeon’s most popular series. Although she enjoyed being a teen idol, Grande stated, “Acting is fun, but music has always been my priority.”
After the first season of Victorious, Grande focused on her music career. She began working on her debut album in August 2010. The second season aired in April 2011, reaching 6.2 million viewers for its highest-rated episode. Later, she distanced herself from the track because she didn’t like its bubblegum pop sound.
Grande continued to contribute to the Victorious soundtracks, including the duet “L.A. Boyz” with Victoria Justice. She also collaborated with Mika on “Popular Song” in 2012. After Victorious ended in 2013, she starred as Snow White in the musical A Snow White Christmas at the Pasadena Playhouse. She also played Amanda Benson in Nickelodeon’s Swindle. Finally, Nickelodeon launched Sam & Cat, a spin-off featuring Grande’s Cat Valentine and Jennette McCurdy’s Sam Puckett as roommates running a babysitting business.
