History

In the early 9th century, Greater Chittagong, including Cox’s Bazar, was under the rule of the Arakan kings until it was conquered by the Mughals in 1666. When Mughal prince Shah Shuja visited Cox’s Bazar on his way to Arakan, passing through what is now the hilly region, he was captivated by its picturesque and mesmerizing beauty.

He ordered his troops to camp there. His entourage of a thousand sedan chairs remained there for some time. A place called Durahazara, which means “Thousand Palanquins,” still exists in this area. After the Mughals, the place came under the control of the Tipuras and Arakanese, then the Portuguese, and then the British.

Cox’s Bazar derives its name from Captain Hiram Cox, a British East India Company officer who was appointed superintendent of the Palonki outpost (now Cox’s Bazar). He succeeded Warren Hastings, who in 1773 became Governor of Bengal under the British East India Company Act. Cox began the rehabilitation and resettlement of Arakanese refugees in the area.

Although he rehabilitated many refugees in the area, he died in 1799 before finishing his work. A market called Cox’s Bazar was established in his memory and named after him. Cox’s Bazar was first established in 1854 and became a municipality in 1869.

After the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857, the British East India Company was heavily criticized on humanitarian grounds, particularly for monopolizing the opium trade in the Indian subcontinent. However, after its dissolution on January 1, 1874, the company’s assets, including its military, became the property of the British Crown. After this takeover, Cox’s Bazar was declared a district of the British state of Bengal.
