Widely acclaimed as one of the best bowlers globally and among India’s greatest fast bowlers, Bumrah plays domestically for Gujarat and represents Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Bumrah holds the distinction of being the fastest Indian pacer to take 150 wickets in Test cricket and the second fastest to reach 100 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Remarkably, he is the first bowler to achieve the number one ranking in the ICC men’s player rankings across all three formats of the game. Additionally, he holds the record for the most runs scored in an over in Test cricket.

Bumrah’s domestic cricket career began with the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he played a crucial role in Gujarat’s maiden title victory. He made his first-class debut against Vidarbha in the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy season. In the same year, he was signed by Mumbai Indians for the IPL, where he has since been instrumental in the team’s five title wins, becoming their second-highest wicket-taker with 145 wickets in 120 matches, trailing only Lasith Malinga.

Bumrah made his international debut in January 2016 during India’s tour of Australia, finishing as the highest wicket-taker in the Twenty20 International (T20I) series. That year, he also became the leading wicket-taker in T20Is with 28 wickets. His Test debut came in 2018 against South Africa. Since December 2023, Bumrah has served as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team and has captained the team once in Rohit Sharma’s absence. Early Life

Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah was born on December 6, 1993, into a Sikh Punjabi family in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. His father, Jasbir Singh, operated a chemical business, and his mother, Daljeet Bumrah, was a school teacher. Tragically, his father passed away from hepatitis B when Jasprit was just five years old. Following this, his mother raised him and his sister, Juhika, in a middle-class environment in Ahmedabad. Bumrah attended Nirman High School in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad, where his mother worked as a teacher.

Youth and Domestic Career

In 2010, Jasprit Bumrah attended Gujarat’s Under-19 district selection trials but was named a reserve due to his unconventional bowling action. Given a chance in the fourth match, he took seven wickets. Bumrah made his T20 debut for Gujarat in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, earning Man of the Match in the final with 3/14 against Punjab. Impressed by his performance in a match against Mumbai, John Wright invited him to join the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2013.

Bumrah debuted in first-class cricket for Gujarat in October 2013, taking seven wickets against Vidarbha. Despite initial concerns about his bowling action during the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he helped Gujarat win the title with a five-wicket haul in the final. On December 11, 2020, he scored his first first-class half-century (55 not out) against Australia A.

International career

2016–2017: International debut

Jasprit Bumrah made his ODI debut in January 2016 against Australia, taking 2/40, including the wicket of Steve Smith. He debuted in T20Is in the same series, taking 3/23 and finishing as the highest wicket-taker with six wickets. In February 2016, he took three wickets in a T20I series against Sri Lanka.

During the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, Bumrah took a wicket in every match except one, finishing with four wickets. In India’s 2016 Zimbabwe tour, he took 4/28 in the first ODI and was the highest wicket-taker of the series with nine wickets. He also excelled in the T20I series, taking five wickets.

In August 2016, Bumrah set a record for most T20I wickets in a calendar year with 28. He took six wickets in the October 2016 ODI series against New Zealand. In January 2017, he was Player of the Match against England in a T20I, and finished the series with five wickets. In the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, he was India’s second leading wicket-taker. On the 2017 Sri Lanka tour, he took 15 wickets, the most by a fast bowler in a bilateral ODI series of five or fewer matches. In February 2018, Bumrah became the highest-ranked bowler in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings.

2018–2019: Test debut and World Cup

In November 2017, Jasprit Bumrah was named in India’s Test squad for the South Africa series. He made his Test debut on January 5, 2018, at Newlands in Cape Town. In the third Test at Johannesburg, he took his maiden five-wicket haul, recording figures of 5/54. South Africa won the series 2–1, with Bumrah being India’s second-highest wicket-taker, behind Mohammed Shami.

In June 2018, Bumrah fractured his left thumb in the first match of India’s tour of Ireland, causing him to miss the rest of the tour and the first two Tests of the 2018 Pataudi Trophy. He returned for the third Test at Trent Bridge, taking 5/85. Despite India’s 4–1 series defeat, Bumrah was the fifth leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets in three matches.

During the Boxing Day Test of India’s 2018 Australia tour, Bumrah took career-best figures of 6/33. He became the first Asian bowler to take five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, and South Africa in the same calendar year. India won the series 2–1, with Bumrah as the joint highest wicket-taker, taking 21 wickets. He ended 2018 with 48 Test wickets, the most by an Indian in their debut year, and was named in both the ICC World Test XI and ODI XI.

In April 2019, Bumrah was included in India’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He took his 100th ODI wicket in his 57th match against Sri Lanka, becoming the second-fastest Indian to reach this milestone. In September 2019, he was ruled out of South Africa’s tour of India due to a stress fracture in his lower back.

2020–2022: Test in India and T20 World Cup

In December 2020, Jasprit Bumrah was named in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade. In January 2021, he missed the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to an abdominal strain and faced racist abuse during the Sydney Test. India won the series, with Bumrah taking 11 wickets. He played his first Test in India in February 2021 and captained India in July 2022 in a Test against England due to Rohit Sharma’s absence.

Bumrah set a record by scoring 29 runs in an over. He was the highest wicket-taker in the 2021 India tour of England and was named player of the series. Bumrah was appointed vice-captain for the T20I and Test series against Sri Lanka in February 2022 and received the Wisden Cricketers of the Year award in April 2022. 2023–Present

Indian Premier League

During the 2013–14 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Mumbai Indians’ head coach John Wright spotted Jasprit Bumrah’s talent and recruited him for the IPL franchise. Since then, Bumrah has been an integral part of Mumbai Indians, helping them secure five IPL titles. With 145 wickets in 120 matches, he’s their second-highest wicket-taker, boasting an average of 23.30 and an economy rate of 7.39.
