Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter was born on May 11, 1999, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and raised in East Greenville. She is the youngest of four siblings and the niece of actress Nancy Cartwright. Sabrina was homeschooled, which allowed her to focus on her passion for music.

At just 10 years old, she started posting videos of herself singing Christina Aguilera and Adele songs on YouTube. Her talent quickly became evident, and her father even built her a home recording studio to support her dreams. In 2009, she competed in The Next Miley Cyrus Project, a singing contest hosted by Miley Cyrus, and finished in third place.

Career

2011–2014: Breakthrough with Disney

Sabrina Carpenter’s acting career began in 2011 with a guest role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Around the same time, she performed “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” at the Gold Mango Audience Festival in China.

In 2012, she had a recurring role on the Fox sitcom The Goodwin Games and appeared in the film Horns (2013). She also recorded “Smile” for the Disney Fairies compilation album Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust, which was featured on Radio Disney. Additionally, she voiced Princess Vivian in Sofia the First and sang “All You Need” with Ariel Winter.

In 2013, Sabrina was cast as Maya Hart in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World, a spin-off of Boy Meets World. The show ran for 72 episodes and concluded in January 2017. Sabrina also recorded the theme song with co-star Rowan Blanchard. Before 2014, she signed a five-album deal with Disney’s Hollywood Records.

In March 2014, Sabrina released her debut single, “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying”, co-written by Meghan Trainor. The song was well-received and became the title track of her debut EP, released in April 2014.

Later that year, she joined other Disney stars to cover “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and recorded “Stand Out” for the Disney Channel movie How to Build a Better Boy. She also released her first Christmas single, “Silver Nights”.

2015–2017: Eyes Wide Open and Evolution

In January 2015, Sabrina Carpenter released “We’ll Be the Stars”, the lead single from her debut album Eyes Wide Open, which came out in April 2015. The album debuted at number 43 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 12,000 copies in its first week. It received positive reviews and won two Radio Disney Music Awards. Sabrina also released the single “Eyes Wide Open” and performed at the D23 Expo. In December, she dropped her second Christmas single, “Christmas The Whole Year Round”.

In 2016, Sabrina released “Smoke and Fire” in February and performed it at the 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards. That year, she starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Adventures in Babysitting alongside Sofia Carson, and the two performed the song “Wildside”. She also appeared in Peter Pan and Tinker Bell: A Pirate’s Christmas and headlined Musikfest in Bethlehem. Sabrina began voicing Melissa Chase on Milo Murphy’s Law.

In October 2016, Sabrina released her second album, Evolution, which debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200. The album included “On Purpose” and “Thumbs”, with “Thumbs” later certified Platinum. Sabrina performed “Thumbs” on The Today Show and The Late Late Show and went on her first headlining tour, the Evolution Tour. She also released a cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” in December.

2018–2020: Singular and films

In March 2018, Sabrina Carpenter released “Alien”, a collaboration with Jonas Blue, which topped the US Dance Club Songs chart. She was also featured in Nylon magazine’s “25 Gen Z’ers Changing The World.” In September, she appeared in The Hate U Give.

Her third album, Singular: Act I, was released in November 2018, with two successful singles, “Almost Love” and “Sue Me”. Sabrina promoted the album on The Today Show and Live with Kelly and Ryan. In 2019, she toured with the Singular Tour and featured on Alan Walker’s “On My Way”.

In July 2019, she released Singular: Act II, exploring personal themes like anxiety. She also starred in Tall Girl on Netflix. 2021–2023: Emails I Can’t Send

In January 2021, Sabrina Carpenter signed with Island Records and released her first single under the label, “Skin”, which debuted at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became her first top 40 hit on the Billboard Global 200, and she performed it on The Late Late Show with James Corden and at the GLAAD Media Awards. Later that year, she appeared in Savage X Fenty Show on Prime Video.

In 2021, she released “Skinny Dipping”, followed by “Fast Times” in 2022. She also starred in Tall Girl 2 and Emergency.

Her fifth album, Emails I Can’t Send, released in July 2022, featured the hit “Nonsense”, which went Platinum and became a viral TikTok sensation. Carpenter also released “Vicious” and “Because I Liked a Boy”, addressing online backlash. She toured in 2022 and released a deluxe edition in 2023.

Carpenter joined Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in 2023 and released a Christmas-themed EP in November.

2024–present: Short n’ Sweet

In March 2024, Sabrina Carpenter collaborated with Girl in Red on the single “You Need Me Now?”. In April, she released “Espresso” and performed at Coachella. The song topped the Billboard Global 200, peaked at number three on the Hot 100, and won MTV’s Song of the Year.

In June, her single “Please Please Please” became her first US Hot 100 number one and second global chart-topper, making her the first female artist to hold the top two spots on the UK Singles Chart for three consecutive weeks.

Her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in August 2024. All album tracks charted in the Hot 100’s top 50, while “Taste” debuted at number two, cementing her record-breaking run. In September, she joined Christina Aguilera for a special performance and launched her first arena tour. Carpenter will also release a Netflix holiday special in December 2024.
